Gin Gimlet

There are some drinks that are very special for the right occasion. A warm evening, relaxed, with a simple supper of fish to look forward to, then it might be time for a gin gimlet.

As it happens, I am rereading Raymond Chandler’s The Long Good-Bye which is what I was reading when I had my first ever gimlet in a bar on the beach in North Carolina.

‘We sat in a corner of the bar at Victor’s and drank gimlets. ‘They don’t know how to make them here,’ he said. ‘What they call a gimlet is just some lime or lemon juice and gin with a dash of sugar and bitters. A real gimlet is half gin and half Rose’s Lime Juice and nothing else. It beats martinis hollow.’

A slice of lime and some ice perhaps?
