More about Brandy and Lovage

I had a good afternoon in the Bristol Archives, finding a reference to three recipe books that had come from the J R Phillips archive and calling them up. They were small, nineteenth century and containing recipes for various drinks including orange bitters, cherry brandy (there was even a mention of a Mrs Heering), rue bitters and raspberry brandy. In the first book, which included some payment stamps, most of the recipes had been crossed out. The second book had few recipes and was mostly blank pages.
The third book had been dated to late nineteenth century and it was in this book, on page 28, that I found the recipe for lovage cordial.

There was even a salutary poem inside the back cover of the book.

“Here I lies with my two daughters
All through drinking Cheltenham Waters
If we had stuck to Epsom Salts
We shouldn’t be lying in these here vaults”
